Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is classed as pain that lasts longer than three months. Chronic pain can be categorised into two main types:
- Pain that has a specific cause or origin - for example where a prolapsed disc is pressing on a sciatic nerve, which may be treated with surgery. As a result of surgery and the disc no longer pressing on the nerve, the pain would normally go away.
- Pain that does not have an identifiable cause - for example if an MRI scan showed nothing that could be identified as causing the pain.
These two types of pain have completely different treatment methods.
Chronic pain patients are those who are not suitable for surgical treatment but are still in some pain. These include people with persistent low back pain, whiplash injuries, complex regional pain syndrome and fibromyalgia.
The pain often has no identifiable cause, due to the fact that the original injury has already healed. It is a very specialised subject and is not as widely understood as acute pain, but here at CMK Therapy we have specialists who have dealt with chronic pain patients for many years and therefore fully understand the treatment methods that research has shown to be most effective.
