Suffering with Back Pain?

Here at CMK Therapy we see all types of back pain, whether it is caused by sitting too long at a desk, working in the garden, or trying to lift too much weight in the gym.

Pain can appear at anytime, immediately following an injury or even a few days later or even weeks. For example someone sitting on a plane for 12 hours might not experience pain until a number of days later.

The pain you experience can be sharp, dull or burning, constant or fleeting. It can travel down one or both legs (sciatica) and may cause pins and needles or numbness and occasionally weakness too. It may be the result of muscle spasm, a disc problem, facet joint pain or, on occasions, even with an MRI scan we may never know the reason for the pain. However, even though we may never know the exact diagnosis, we know which movements produce pain and which treatments will alleviate them.

Many individuals believe pain will go away on its own and therefore never seek treatment. Their first instinct is to limit activity, but often if this continues it can lead to further pain and stiffness and aggravate the underlying problem.

Sudden-onset Pain

Sudden onset of back pain can occur at any time and can be triggered by something as small as standing up, bending over or reaching to grab something. If you experience sudden back pain, it can reduce your range of movement significantly and can sometimes be so painful that it prevents any real movement. You may find that all you can do is lay down - which can be quite frightening. In these circumstances please do phone us as we are more than happy to provide advice and reassurance over the phone or suggest treatment if that is required.

Chronic Back Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain that continues for longer than three months, outlasting the usual healing process. It can be quite frustrating to experience pain for long periods of time, and it is important in these cases to determine the underlying cause of the pain. Here at CMK Therapy we treat many cases of chronic back pain. We find that over 60% of the patients we see with back pain are office workers who sit 6-8 hours a day. Did you know sitting can double the  pressure on your back compared to standing? Often chronic back pain needs a more complex approach.  As well as manipulation and massage, treatments may involve ergonomics, lifetyle changes or learning what activities to avoid and what exercises are best for you.

How we can help

We have the knowledge and expertise to make a diagnosis and to prescribe treatments. This often involves massage and manipulation to get your back moving again, which will reduce the pain. We then back this up with mobility and strengthening exercises. Of course, everyone is different, whether you have had back pain for a few days or you have been suffering for a few years, we can help. Our aim is to keep you mobile, help you to come off the painkillers and most importantly return you to doing the things you enjoy best. This may be walking the dog, playing sport, playing with the children or simply being able to wake up in the morning with a little more spring in your step.

I was referred to CMK Therapy by my back Consultant as I was having terrible back and leg pain that he thought may need surgery. However, after some intensive physiotherapy and Clincial Pilates at the clinic, I have made an excellent recovery and am even back playing tennis.
